Two corrupt OCP employees are murdering homeless people in order to find a brain suitable for their latest project: MetroNet, a city wide network controlling power and communications. Conspiring with RoboCop's arch nemesis Ray "Pudface" Morgan, a criminal scarred in a toxic accident during a previous skirmish with the cyborg police officer, they put Robo out of commission. In cryofreeze and without approval from OCP for necessary repairs, the three are free to do as they please... On the heels of RoboCop 3, Canada's Skyvision acquired the rights to a RoboCop television series. The creators and writers of the original RoboCop film, Michael Miner and Ed Nuemeier, had the rights of first refusal in their contract, allowing them the opportunity to script the pilot for the proposed RoboCop series. Utilizing their rough script for RoboCop 2 (subtitled Corporate Wars and which never made it past its initial draft before Orion recruited Frank Miller to pen the sequel) they incorporated several aspects of the story, most notably the inclusion of NeuroBrain and her ghostly projected form. This episode's main baddies (Pudface, Mallardo, and Chayken) all return at least twice in the series. Look closely and you'll see that the shots of Robo's left leg holster are just flipped shots of the other side. An opening left holster was never built for the show. The make-up appliances for Murphy and Pudface were created from silicone, an expensive rarity at the time when foam latex was still the material of choice for effects prosthetics. After this episode, all of Andrea Roth's (Diana/NeuroBrain) scenes will film entirely on a bluescreen set. Blu Mankuma (Sgt. Parks) returns in voice, albeit as Sgt. A new OCP beauty product dubbed Eve (with the ability to change someone's appearance for a matter of hours) is jacked from a testing lab by two of Pudface's goons who quickly use it to break the baddie out of prison. Setting into motion a plan to eliminate Robo once and for all, Murphy's son Jimmy is twisted into their plot; RoboCop must save his son and stop Pudface's plan to infiltrate OCP and destroy it from the inside out. Shorty and Leo, Pudface's two goons, make their first appearance here. They show up several times during the show. Ken Quinn sure shows up a lot. He can be seen at the Murphy residence, driving and shooting, and also in the warehouse when Shorty shows up in disguise and when swinging on the wrecking ball. He's dubbed in by Richard Eden in the boardroom ("Pudface Morgan, surrender") and takes the fall. The cable attaching Murphy to the wrecking ball is very clear. It's attached at Robo's wrist, and he isn't even holding on. An obvious dummy makes an appearance at the end of the sequence as well; the bottom of the feet are hollow save for a couple of wooden blocks. The open back panel on Robo when he is being repaired is a leftover prop from RoboCop 3. In the film, that piece is removed to reveal his tracking beacon. The Chairman's computer terminal is used again, this time exercising option 5, "Cyborg Termination", shown previously in Zone 5. The Chairman's response to Diana's presence indicates that he has never seen her before. The actual production order of The Series is unknown, only the air dates, which were used for the French and Australian DVD releases (there has been no Region 1 release) so it's very likely this episode occurs before Officer Missing (1x04). BTW, why did Robo grab onto the wrecking ball? What reason could he possibly have for such a boneheaded maneuver? A cache of weapons is stolen from OCP and Robo is injured by a plasma attack during the robbery. The ensuing investigation uncovers a secret group that operated during the Amazon War, supposedly all KIA, behind the weapons theft. Is their plan real, or just a front for their actual intentions? The host of the game show "Boy, Do I Feel Stupid!" incorrectly pronounces the name of the 6000 SUX as the "Sucks 6000". It may kill the entire joke, but it also may have been legally required, as even the Old Man's name had to be changed to the Chairman. Murphy's wife's name was also changed from Ellen to Nancy for the series as well, oddly echoing the name of the actress who portrayed Robo's partner Lewis in the films: Nancy Allen. This episode is quite light on the trivia, unfortunately. Supplemental info on the RoboSuit itself should help fill the void. Created by Rob Bottin, the RoboSuit is comprised of numerous pieces of fiberglass hard armor hung over foam latex soft armor. Depending on the suit type, it could weigh anywhere from 40 to 65 pounds. An inner spandex suit had the joint details permanently adhered, over which larger sections such as the stomach and "diaper" were attached. The hard armor was then clipped and literally screwed together on top. The helmet completely removed vision from top-to-bottom, and it was common for the suit actors to trip over objects and walk into things. When a prominent anti-RoboCop TV reverend is murdered with Robo's Auto-9 pistol, Murphy must become a fugitive from the law in order to prove his innocence. This episode owes greatly to the film version of The Fugitive. Homage or rip-off, it's your choice. The title and basic concept of this episode is derived from the Dark Horse Comics RoboCop mini-series of the same name. Regardless of the specialized nature of RoboCop's gun and ammunition, two separate pistols would leave two unique sets of ballistics markings for forensics to find. RoboCop's gun, the Auto-9, was based on a Beretta M93r with an enlarged grip (to fit Robo's hands), a large capacity magazine, and a barrel extension (resembling a coffin as per the wishes of director Paul Verhoeven) with side vents that created a three-flame burst when the gun was fired. The base gun was a machine pistol, and could be set to single shot, triple shot, and full-automatic. Robo's gun was permanently set to a three-round burst. A newer, lighter version of the gun was created for The Series for easier handling, and to alleviate importing problems with customs. The name itself, Auto-9, was used in the script for RoboCop, but was never said in any of the films. Vlad "Stitch" Molotov's first appearance in the series. He'll have a recurring role lasting until the penultimate episode. The use of Robo's data spike (Terminal Strip in the original script IIRC) as a heating element/conduit is first explored here, and used again on a later occasion. Crew, a notorious gang of thugs, has been contracted by OCP to patrol Zone Five in light of an epidemic of "Fun", a drug removing all inhibitions and guilt from the user. The bad news for Robo is that the C.A.P. have recruited his young son Jimmy, while he's been programmed to not enter Zone Five. The bad news for OCP is that the C.A.P. Crew is secretly manufacturing and distributing "Fun" for all of Delta City. The woman from the No-Gain commercial makes another appearance here in the "Fun House" eating ice cream. Jimmy sure likes getting caught up in these sorts of things, and it's just going to continue happening for the rest of the series. He's the Wesley Crusher of RoboCop. This is one of several episodes where Robo's suit is rather ill fitting. There's a noticeable gap between his face and the black jaw piece. In the thumbnail for this episode Robo is sitting in his cruiser. Due to the bulkiness of the RoboSuit, the legs have to be removed in order to fit in the car. Even in the films, he's only seen entering and exiting the car from the waist up. The only exception is in RoboCop 3, when the PimpMobile's door comes off; a false leg was attached the stunt driver's hip, and his black spandex covered leg can be seen behind it, operating the foot pedals. There are large continuity errors between shots with the garbage thrown at Robo. The C.A.P. dude with the sledgehammer clearly misses the Funhead in the opening. Again, stunt double Ken Quinn gets face time when the RoboCruiser is shutdown outside Zone Five. That's a rather spacious 2-story building the C.A.P. Crew inhabit, huh? The Chairman's control panel, which he uses for accessing Robo, appears again in the show. You'll also notice an option for "Direct Com-Link". This feature will pop up in the next episode. Two shady execs in charge of OCP's new welfare program, being tested in Delta City before going nationwide, are keeping people from getting out of the system and using sophisticated (and damaging) brainwashing to get their way and keep their bank accounts full. When Murphy discovers underhanded loopholes have kept his wife and child from receiving his benefits, and been keeping them in the welfare program, he must try to find a way around the system and get his family help while the two execs conspire with a felonious explosives expert to settle the situation once and for all. The character of Martin is played by Geraint Wyn Davies, who played the villain Kaydick in the 2000 mini-series RoboCop Prime Directives. The RoboCop helmet is much too large to fit over the bulky makeup. In the first film this was cheated by only showing the top of the helmet lifting up, then panning down to the exposed face and artificial skull. The Series was able to show the helmet coming off with a simple perspective trick: they used a half helmet with no backside. The neck suddenly becoming exposed, however, is still a problem that was never solved in the films. Stunt double Ken Quinn is in the RoboSuit walking through the halls of WebCare. He even gets a close-up before using the thermographic vision and while firing the Auto-9. Additional shots show him walking amongst the flames in the finale. 25:12, the first of only three of Robo's signature gun twirls in the show. One of two major entering/exiting a car cheats in the series at 29:45. Richard Eden approaches the car, offscreen we hear the car door opening and closing, then we pan over to Ken Quinn in the seat of the RoboCruiser. Robo's Com-Link is shown in use for the first time, it'll pop up again later. Robo's data spike (I prefer Terminal Strip) is a separate prop from the suit. It consists of a hard fiberglass hand with articulated fingers attached to a long rod. A puppeteer holds it offscreen and activates it on cue, pulling the fingers down into a closed fist before the strip ejects, which flips up the knuckle plate. The same design was used in the films, but The Series also utilized a glove with the spike attached, so that Eden could use it in full body shots. 39:02, RoboParkinson's.
