An important documentary featuring Space Captain Smith. Sort of.
Tea
a beverage brewed from the fermented dried leaves of the shrub Camellia sinensis and imbibed by all the great civilisations in the galaxy's history; a source of refreshment, stimulation and, above all else, of moral fibre - without which the British Space Empire must surely crumble to leave Earth at the mercy of its enemies.
Sixty per cent of the Empire's tea is grown on one world - Urn, principal planet of the Didcot system. If Earth is to keep fighting, the tea must flow.
When a crazed cult leader overthrows the government of Urn, Isambard Smith and his vaguely competent crew find themselves saddled with new allies: a legion of tea-obsessed nomads, an overly-civilised alien horde and a commando unit so elite that it only has five members.
Only together can they defeat the self-proclaimed God Emperor of Didcot and confront the true power behind the coup: the sinister legions of the Ghast Empire and Smith's old enemy, Commander 462..

This is another of my £50 films. I co-wrote it with my very best friend Richard Shields (who also stars in the film -- what a talent!) CAMPING was shot on a domestic Mini DV camera (with two additional screw on wide/telephoto lenses) and a thirty quid mic'. CAMPING is completely different from DOODLBUG. Whereas DOODLEBUG was about the keneticism of film (cinema does a chase better than any other medium) CAMPING is about the story coming from the characters. It's about performance; it's about letting the camera calm down so the actors can tell the story. I knew I had a car (mine!) I knew I could get hold of friends who were good actors. I guessed these friends owned a black suit each. The urn I bought from a Hinckley antiques shop for £8. The bulk of this story was filmed over one weekend. The story and character arcs were scripted, so we knew for certain which direction the story was headed. We rehearsed vigorously before shooting. Improvisation works if the actors know their starting point and their end point in each scene. As the director I gave them a couple of key lines that I knew we needed to ensure the story made sense. I'm really proud of what a few mates achieved with a domestic camera, a Renault Megane, a couple of black suits, a brass urn and a few spare weekends. This was edited at home on my PC. Music by Dom from Nuneaton Arts Centre. The super 8mm stuff was shot on Super 8mm and telecined at my house. Hope this film is proof you don't need huge budgets to tell a good story on the screen. This film forms the pilot episode of a six part TV series (called BABY STEPS); we really enjoyed taking these two characters on a journey, over the six episodes -- the characters and the situation really has legs. As yet the proposal has been ignored by production companies and the BBC. Bugger! Camping Part 3 |
