Renaissance man Reginald Lucien Frank Roger Watts (also known as simply Reggie) is a keyboardist, violinist, vocalist and comedian. To witness Reggie perform in one of his various iterations—as the singer of Maktub, as keyboardist and singer of the techno-pop band Synth Club, or as a one-man comedic force of nature—is to witness a talent with unparalleled breadth and depth.
As founder and singer of the wildly popular pop band Maktub, Reggie got his start in the music arena in Seattle, Washington. Due in part to his popular onstage comedic antics during Maktub performances, he decided to pursue comedy further. He moved to New York and put together a wholly unique and improvisational act that involves singing while looping his vocals with a sampler. He has since performed at comedy festivals in Montreal, Cape Town and Edinburgh, and racked up a few well-deserved awards in the meantime: the Seattle Mayor's Arts Award, the 2005 Malcolm Hardee "Oye Oye" Award and the 2006 Andy Kaufman Comedy Award.
Reggie met with Crossfader to talk about his artistic process, his ventures into the "webisode," and his desires to build a media empire. Reggie Watts |

Here's a little cut of my show on the night that I "got discovered"!
For some reason, the audio is out of sync with the video, but it doesn't matter. I like authentic stuff being on youtube, and this is an authentic performance in a medium sized room on a historic night in my life. It was a showcase made up basically of people from work and everyone I could invite, and I left the night with a great manager. I really have mad love for everybody involved in this night. Thank you (you know who you are). Watt Smith at the Haha Comedy |
