The Porsche 911 (pronounced as Nine Eleven, German: Neunelfer) is a sports car made by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. The famous, distinctive, and durable design is notable for being rear engined like the Porsche-designed Volkswagen Beetle it had been based on. It was also air-cooled until the introduction of the all-new Type 996 in 1998. Since its introduction in autumn 1963[1], it has undergone continuous development. Since its inception the 911 has been modified, both by private teams and the factory itself, for racing, rallying and other types of automotive competition. It is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, as the normally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR in the mid 1970s has won major world championship sports car races such as Targa Florio, Daytona, Sebring or Nürburgring outright even against prototypes. The 935 turbo also added the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979.In the international poll for the award of Car of the Century, the 911 came fifth after the Ford Model T, the Mini, the Citroën DS and the Volkswagen Beetle. It is the most successful surviving application of the air (now water) cooled opposed rear engine layout pioneered by its original ancestor, the Volkswagen Beetle, having increased its original 25 PS more than tenfold, or 30fold in turbocharged race cars. It is the second-oldest sports car nameplate still in production, behind the Chevrolet Corvette. The Porsche 911 classic was developed as a much more powerful, larger, more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356, the company's first model, and thus essentially a sporting evolution of the Volkswagen Beetle. The new car made its public debut at the 1963[1] Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, better known to English speakers as the Frankfurt Motor Show. It originally was designated as the "Porsche 901" (901 being its internal project number). However, Peugeot protested on the grounds that in France it had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. So, instead of selling the new model with another name in France, Porsche changed the name to 911. It went on sale in 1964, giving buyers their most competent alternative rival yet to the Jaguar E Type. The earliest edition of the 911 had a 130 PS[1] (96 kW) flat-6 engine, in the "boxer" configuration like the 356, air-cooled and rear-mounted, displaced 1991 cm³ (cc) compared with the 356's four-cylinder, 1600 cc unit. The car had four seats although the rear seats were very small, thus the car is usually called a 2+2 rather than a four-seater (the 356 was also a 2+2). It was mated to a five-speed manual "Type 901" transmission. The styling was largely by Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche, son of Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche. Erwin Komenda, the leader of the Porsche car body construction department, was also involved in the design. In one of the most Pathetic Finishes to a world championship ever, Lewis Hamilton took the title by a single point after Fucktard Timo Glock gifted him his fifth position on the final corner of the final lap of the final race of the 2008 season. "The most dramatic race of my whole life," said Hamilton. "It's pretty much impossible to put this into words: I'm still speechless. It's been such a long journey, but I've always had the support of my family, the team, our partners and the fans. We did a fantastic job throughout the whole year and, with all the sacrifices we made, I'm so thrilled to be able to win this for everyone. Before it started to rain I was quite comfortable, and I was just focused on having a clean race. Then it started to drizzle and I didn't want to take any risks - but Sebastian got past me and I was told that I had to get back in front of him. I couldn't believe it. Then at the very last corner I managed to get past Timo - it was just amazing. This was one of the toughest races of my life, if not the toughest. I was shouting, 'Do I have it? Do I have it?' on the radio. It was only when I took the chequered flag and got to Turn One that the team told me I was world champion. I was ecstatic." Team boss Ron Dennis added, "Well, that was a really tough race. We never pushed hard, we never did anything silly, but of course the late rain made things extraordinarily tense. Even so, even when Sebastian got past Lewis, we never gave up, and Lewis never gave up, because we knew that Timo was on dry tyres. Lewis took his chance brilliantly, and the result was one of the most thrilling finishes in sporting history. I'm so proud of Lewis; I'm so proud of the team; everyone - every single one of them - did an absolutely fantastic job. Fucktard Timo Glock was quick making all sort of excuses to deny the undeniable: "I was on dry tyres at the end of the race when it was raining quite badly and it was just impossible on the last lap," Glock said. "I was fighting as hard as I could but it was so difficult to just keep the car on the track and I lost positions right at the end of the lap. Finishing in the top six is a decent result for me because I'd been struggling with the car earlier in the weekend but we were very close to fourth place so I am a bit disappointed." Martyn's debut car race. Held at a wet and windy Knockhill in Scotland. Checkout the full story at www.martynlyell.co.uk This series has grown into an amazing success story with grids at Knockhill of 20 - 30 cars more often than not. These bizarre looking cars are 5/8 scale replicas of 1930s American saloon cars fitted with 1200 or 1250 cc motorcycle engines and a sequential gearbox. Their stiffened suspension makes them handle like karts in the dry, and everything about the series makes for overtaking and excitement as the cars' miniature size encourages three-wide racing through the corners and last ditch overtaking attempts. Also mixing things up is the random grid order for the first of the three races that makes up each Legends Championship round. The grid order is then reversed in the second race and for the final the day's fastest drivers start from the back. All of this combines to make for some very exciting opening laps! The first two races of each round are 8 lap sprints with the final taking place over 10 laps. These tremendous compact cars are the best fun to drive; they are highly responsive and just love to go flat out!
